Girls in Science Forum

Melton Christian College was recently selected amongst 50 Victorian secondary schools to attend the 2018 L’Oréal Australia and the University of Melbourne Girls in Science Forum.

Students from Years 9 and 10 were selected to attend this wonderful event with Mrs. McCarthy, our Science Faculty Leader. Students had the opportunity to hear from inspirational keynote speakers of the 2018 Australian and New Zealand L'Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Fellows. The careers of these Science Fellows began from humble beginnings, with an interest in school Science and now are changing peoples’ lives in ground-breaking fields. Speakers addressed their area of study, such as Humans and Robotics, ending skin disease for Australia’s indigenous children, enhancing perception of the world through Augmented Reality and unlocking the secrets to the universe, just to name a few topics. Students toured the University of Melbourne and participated in various scientific activities during the afternoon, allowing them to further open their minds to the possibilities of a career in Science.

This is what some of the students had to say:

“I really enjoyed being a part of the Girls in Science Forum at Melbourne University. I liked hearing about what each of the women do in particular. I think it was great how we walked around the campus because we got to see what the area was like. It was very cool how we got to see what the engineering students were working on. It was a very good day and we got to have a taste of what university might be like for us in the near future.” - Lucinda.

“Going to Melbourne University was a great experience. I was able to see how determined people were to accomplish their dreams and we were also able to see different fields of science. I wish we saw more classes than bioengineering and zoology, but overall it was inspiring to be able to see people work hard for their career”. - Ravleen

“I found the Girls in Science Forum to be fun, engaging and informative. It really helped me to think further about what I want to do and what I am striving towards. It was also great to see the Melbourne University grounds and to experience it as a possible prospective university”. - Laura

”The event was very well thought out and structured. Everyone was so nice and kind and I really enjoyed the day. The Virtual Reality and the Augmented Reality workshops were cool. The zoology museum with all the animals from various classification groups were fascinating”. - Alesha
