A Higher Calling
As a Christian school, we are familiar with the values of humility and thankfulness. These are concepts the Bible teaches, and as Secondary staff, we often share how grateful we are to be part of our school and for the opportunities we have to help students discover their future pathways.
An interesting verse in the Bible states, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” While we may wonder what this has to do with education, this passage reminds us of God’s consistent and eternal nature and, therefore, His constant and everlasting purpose. It’s a powerful way to view the world – through the care and unchanging purposes of a God who never changes.
Our Secondary staff are always looking at ways to develop their skills, adapt to changing technologies, aim for excellence in their teaching, and seek innovative resources so that students can learn better and achieve more. However, while we are looking for new ways, our deeper, core purpose and values remain unchanged. Teachers and staff, both in Secondary and across the college, often speak about their role as a calling—a higher purpose under God, that includes teaching lessons, marking assessments, providing feedback, being role models and building community.
It is our service to God’s unchanging purpose that motivates us to be a school committed to care, kindness, and valuing all people. We are thankful to do this on a daily basis, and we are thankful for the opportunity to partner with so many parents in this purpose.
Not long ago, our senior student leadership team presented at our Mother’s Day event. Their encouraging presentation was a reminder that education is also about developing the skills and abilities of the whole child. Soon, our Secondary school will commence mid-year exams, and teachers are working hard to prepare students to do their best, something we all want. But as students approach these assessments, we also know they are more than just their results. They are individuals created by a loving God who has a higher purpose for them – and this makes what we do truly rewarding.
