Cyber Safety with Victoria Police

Newsletter | Primary Update

Last week the Year 5 and 6 students took part in a Cyber Safety incursion provided by our good friends from the Victoria Police. This information was provided in a sensitive and informative way. All the children went away having learnt something new.

The following things were covered:

  • The importance of not sharing personal information online
  • Possible legal implications for online bullying
  • Social media safety and recommended age for use
  • Safer websites for children
  • Steps to take if being bullied online or inappropriate content appears

The students were encouraged to let their parents know of any social media platforms they use and any apps or websites they regularly access. If you’re not sure what your child is doing online, now is the time to start asking and checking. We want your children to be safe.

We are aiming to have a parent information session with the Victoria Police later this year.

In the meantime, the following websites may be helpful:

Learning how to use technology safely must begin at home. Know what your children are doing. Technology is a good thing when used the right way, it is our job to educate our children in this.

Currently, where we, as a society, are seeing an unprecedented connection to our devices, let’s use this opportunity to step a little closer to our kids on this important topic and even perhaps consider our own digital habits to encourage a healthy balance.
