Head, Heart and Hand
In a healthy school community, there is agreement on what is important.
The things that matter to parents, matter to staff, and what matters to staff also matters to parents. In fact, evidence of parent-staff alignment is one clear indicator, helping you to know if you are in the right school.
All aspects of the right school for you will have an aroma of shared identity. It is often the seemingly inconsequential everyday moments that remind us of, and draw us back into our school’s identity. Everyday things call us back to who we are and what we value as a learning community under Christ.
It is inspiring that the staff, and the parents at Melton Christian College value several things at the same time. Academic achievement is valued, as is integrity, and personal growth is a third excellent pursuit. We see at our school that parents don’t want one or another exclusively, they wisely want all. Whole-child learning is another way to put it. Our parents and our teachers are committed to the development of learning for the whole child; academically/intellectually, socially, spiritually, physically. In Christian schools we often use the metaphor of Head, Heart and Hand.
When we talk about the Head, we are talking about cultivating curiosity, questioning culture, challenging distortions and hopefully inspiring a love of learning. Our classrooms are places where students are stretched, encouraged, and supported to grow intellectually. Yet learning is never just about information; it is about formation.
That is why the Heart matters just as much. A child’s character, their sense of belonging, their understanding of God’s love for them and thus their true value are not “extras” in education. They are central. In a Christian school community, we want students to understand that they are loved by God, valued by their teachers, and connected to one another. When the heart is nurtured, students develop resilience, empathy, and a wholesome self-identity.
And then there is the Hand: the practical outworking of learning. This is where knowledge and character become action. Serving others, creating something new, solving real problems, and taking responsibility for their own learning are ways that our students grow. They learn that their gifts are not merely for themselves, but it is in giving that we receive.
Head, Heart, and Hand aligned together means children flourish and flourishing is the formation we pray and work for every day at Melton Christian College.
Thank you parents, for partnering with staff in this shared calling. Let’s continue to build a school where academic learning, integrity and personal growth are equally valued.
