Key Takeaways from Matilda Jr.
This week will see Melton Christian College perform their 17th Annual Secondary Production, and this year the secondary students will be performing Matilda Jr.
Matilda Jr. tells the story of a young girl named Matilda Wormwood, who is exceptionally intelligent and has a love for reading. Despite her extraordinary abilities, Matilda faces a challenging life, as her parents and the cruel headmistress of her school, Miss Trunchbull, fail to recognize her potential. Despite these challenges Matilda sees her classmates suffering and stands up to the oppression she and her group face.
That aligns itself well with what we believe as Christians doesn’t it? Proverbs 31:8-9 says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” All of these students were scared and lived in daily terror of their cruel headmistress, including Matilda. Even so, she spoke up on behalf of the group and pointed out the bad behaviour, ultimately freeing the students of their oppression.
Our cast of students involved have been working hard since the end of last year. Each student has done well to remember lines, choreography and harmonies. They do all this very well, but where they all excel at is the support and encouragement that they give to each other. Over the course of six months this group of students who have all come from different year levels, come together and form a tight knit community. It is a privilege for myself every year to see this and to be part of it this community (which is one of our Core Values). They all should be very proud of what they have achieved this year.
