Melbourne University Maths Competition

Newsletter | Teaching and Learning

Several of our Year 5 and 6 students have been working on open-ended Maths projects as part of the 2022 Research Competition run by Melbourne University’s School of Mathematics and Statistics.

This competition gives students an opportunity to understand what it means to solve mathematical problems. This involves gathering data, hypothesising, and proving their hypothesis. The focus of this competition is to encourage creativity and problem-solving skills and to work as a team collaboratively with others.

Our Year 5 and 6 students have keenly cooperated in small groups to take on the challenge. They have been enthusiastic and motivated to seek out solutions. They have collaborated well and have approached their choice of tasks with creativity.
